After making his crack about homosexuals, Oliver North took to The Washington Post Op-Ed page to explain. The fellow who ran a secret war said that "the way" he made his point was wrong and that "we cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging hatred." He continued: "I know better because I believe deeply in a system of Judeo-Christian values that teaches me to deplore the sin, not the sinner." North is quick to wrap himself in a Judeo-Christian robe, but the church in which he worships is anything but pluralistic. Several years ago, an associate of mine attended services at the fundamentalist Church of the Apostles in Fairfax, Virginia. North was in the crowd. The Rev. Brian Cox sermonized that the congregation's duty was to "re-create the Kingdom of God on earth." And, he added after a dramatic pause, that kingdom "is not a democracy."

Fundamentalists - be they Christian, Jewish or Islamic - threaten democracy because they consider themselves to be the only ones who know the Word. …
