Hershey's Track and Field Crosses the Finish Line

Article excerpt

Created in 1975, the Hershey's Track and Field Games is the largest youth sports program of its kind in the U.S. and Canada. Meets take place in every state and every province in North America, and the grand finale--the North American Final Meet--takes place in Hershey, Pa. This year, the finals were held Aug. 4-7, with more than 500 children competing in the 42 final events and 40,000 competing throughout the country in the local meets.

As a partner of NRPA, the Hershey's Track and Field Games is to introduce children to physical fitness through basic events like running, jumping and throwing. But the program also strives to encourage children to reach their potential and develop a sense of accomplishment. NRPA's National Partnerships Director Kathy Spangler said, "As the longest running grassroots program coordinated by park and recreation agencies, this program is focused on expanding the opportunities for young people to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle. The Hershey's Track and Field Youth Program has always been more than a track meet by fostering active recreation and sport participation."
