Clinton Sends a Message to Kids: Treatment Works!

President Clinton took on a tough audience: young kids. In a 'live' special on ABC television, President Bill Clinton faced a roomful of youngsters from around the country, and took calls from viewers on a toll-free line. He answered questions on a broad range of topics, including drug rehabilitation.

Angela, a teenage girl from Florida told President Clinton that she had come from a drug rehabilitation center in Fort Pierce, Florida. She asked the President why we spend so much money on cutting off the supply of drugs from entering the country, and what he was going to do to reduce the demand for drugs.

"You're a brave girl and I'm glad you came," said Clinton. "The reason I said that is because my brother is also a recovering drug user. And I have a brother-in-law who is a defense lawyer in drug court in Miami that keeps people out of jail if they'll go into rehab.

"I can tell you what we're going to try to do. We're going to try to shift some of the money that used to be spent on excessive expenditures in some kinds of enforcement, and do more to do rehab and education for people. Because I believe that rehabilitation works, and I think that if we had drug treatment on demand, that is without delay, for people who want it, we would cut down on the cost of the courts. …
