O'Reilly Releases First Book in Online Library

O'Reilly & Associates has released the first book in die new O'Reilly Online Library. Volume 3M, The X Window System User's Guide, Motif Edition, an introduction for users of The X Window System, is available for licensing and distribution with online documentation systems. It can be licensed as SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) source files, which contain all the information in the print version of Volume 3 M, including the graphic illustrations.

O'Reilly & Associates is developing new technology that will provide additional opportunities for online distribution. By 1994, die company will offer books in die O'Reilly Online Library as an off-die-shelf product, complete with browser software developed by O'Reilly. It is also developing client-server technology that will allow any browser to act as a client and retrieve books from the company's library server. Both developments address the need to reduce the time-to-market of getting valuable information online.

"We are interested in developing partnerships with companies that would like to explore these technology solutions," said Dale Dougherty, manager of O'Reilly's Digital Media Group.

While O'Reilly requires that an online documentation system have some means of protecting its books online against unlicensed redistribution, it has a flexible individual user license that allows multiple users to access the same copy of the book, but not multiple users concurrently. …
