Washington Research Library Consortium Increases Resource Sharing with NOTIS PACLoan

Students and faculty at the seven universities belonging to the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) soon will be able to request materials online from member libraries using the PACLoan system, released by NOTIS Systems, Inc., for IntraSystem Loan.

Patrons will be able to submit requests from terminals in their dorm rooms, faculty offices, computer labs, homes or other sites as well as from the library.

"PACLoan will improve patron access to materials," says Lizanne Payne, Executive Director of WRLC. "It is particularly valuable for a consortium, but it is beneficial for any organization with libraries in different locations because it allows patrons to submit online requests for items anywhere in die library system."

With PACLoan, library patrons can search the shared WRLC online catalog and, after finding a desired item, may submit an online loan request. The system will gather the necessary bibliographic information from the online catalog, and will prompt the patron to enter identifying information and choose a delivery location. The request is forwarded electronically to the lending office where the item can be retrieved for pickup by WRLC's daily delivery service.

According to Payne, "PACLoan should save time for patrons and for ILL staff. Patrons won't need to wait for their next trip to the library to request an interlibrary loan, and ILL staff won't need to double check the bibliographic information and verify that the patron is authorized to borrow. …
