Mead Data Central Debuts New Features, Library and Software for the Lexis/Nexis Services

Article excerpt

Mead Data Central, Inc. has introduced two new online features as well as a new library on the Lexis/Nexis services. The new LINK and LOG features, along with the new Lexis Hot Topics library, are designed to enable users to increase productivity by saving time and money and by improving the quality of online research results.

In addition, Version 2.7 of Lexis/Nexis session manager software for an MS-DOS environment is now available, offering many enhancements from previous versions.

The LINK Feature

Moving from document to document while online in the Lexis service is easier than ever before with the new LINK feature. Whenever a citation within a document is preceded by a LINK marker (<=I>), the user can move directly to the full text of the document cited by simply entering an equal sign and number contained in the market.

Users who have the new MS-DOS session manager software (Version 2.7) are able to simply tab to the market and press the transmit key or "point and click" with a mouse to access a marked document.

LINK markers are currently present within all federal and state case law documents, law review articles, and ALR annotations. Citations to the following types of documents are marked with LINK markers:

* Federal and state case law documents

* Attorney general opinions

* Selected tax-related documents

* Law review articles

* Federal regulations

Using the LINK feature costs less than conducting a new search for a marked document. The cost of using the LINK feature is the same as the cost of using the LEXSEE command: $4.00 per search. With LINK, however, there are no commands or citation formats to memorize, therefore, the risk of making typographical errors and retrieving the wrong document is reduced.

The LINK feature can also be used to verify marked citations in the Auto-cite service and the Shepard's Citations Service. The user simply enters "ac" or "sh" before entering the reference number. The LINK feature can also be combined with the FOCUS feature to find references to a marked citation within your current results set

The LOG Feature

The new LOG feature of the Lexis/Nexis services allows users to store results of multiple searches, then access those results as often as they wish for the rest of the day while incurring no additional search charges. The new KEEP and LOG commands, as well as the new LINK feature, are incorporated into the new LOG feature. …
