Kay Quits as Courage Signs Carlsberg Deal

Carlsberg marketing chief Stephen Kay is quitting Carlsberg-Tetley (C-T) only three months after the company was set up.

Although not yet officially confirmed, Kay is expected to leave his directorship of the Carlsberg brands in June. He has yet to find a new job.

"I am disappointed to have had to make this decision, but it's one I feel is necessary," says Kay. "The split has been amicable."

He cites the relocation of the Carlsberg marketing team from Northampton to C-T headquarters in Burton-on-Trent next week as one reason for leaving.

But C-T insiders suspect there were other factors at work. "He couldn't work under Liz Morgan |C-T marketing director~," says one. "It's partly a structural thing. Stephen was boss before the merger. Now he has to get everything OK'd by Liz."

"He didn't get on with Liz's hands-on management style," says another. "She is three years younger than him and less experienced, too."

Morgan responded cautiously to the news. …
