April 19 could herald a new era for breakfast station GMTV, with a raft of changes set to consolidate the improved audiences the station announced last week.

A new look news service, a new presenter for the Top Of The Morning, a new set, and the introduction of more magazine-style segments were confirmed this week by director of programming Peter McHugh, although he denies the changes constitute a relaunch.

The spring revamp is being touted by GMTV as cosmetic, but with viewing to the station less than TV-am's this time last year and competition fierce, GMTV must grow its audience quickly.

News will now be presented by Sky News anchorwoman Penny Smith, and London News Network's Fern Britton has been recruited as the new presenter of Top Of The Morning. A new set has been designed and weather forecasts will now be presented from the London studio.

New slots for health and fitness, consumer-interest, money, and television and film reviews are planned and McHugh is even hoping to persuade the former TV-am presenters Jimmy Greaves and Paul Gambaccini to join the station. …
