Naomi Watts and fellow actor Scott Coffey became friends when both had small roles in 1995's Tank Girl. But while Watts had a breakout role in Mulholland Drive, Coffey got fed up with the acting grind and turned to writing and directing. Pal Watts starred in his short film Ellie Parker, a Sundance hit that the duo have now made into a feature about struggling actors in Los Angeles.

Did making this ultra-low-budget feature film with Naomi Watts after The Ring affect filming at all?

It was harder to get her to have time to shoot. One of the scenes we shot in her dressing room between scenes on The Ring Two. There was no crew, ever. It was just me shooting the entire movie--except for the scenes that I'm in, which my boyfriend shot.

How much of Ellie's experiences were drawn from your own experiences and Naomi's?

When I was an actor, I would sometimes have to go to four, five [auditions in one day], especially in pilot season. Naomi had similar experiences. I was either doctor, lawyer, cop--bullshit like that. …
