IMLS, Public Broadcasting Announce $1.4 Million in Grants

The Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced September 27 that the Partnership for a Nation of Learners, an IMLS-CPB joint effort to encourage collaboration between cultural organizations, has awarded $1,447,022 to seven cooperative projects in seven states.

Among the award winners:

* $249,626 to the Avampato Discovery Museum in Charleston, West Virginia, in partnership with the Kanawha County Library System and the West Virginia Public Broadcasting System, for "Healthy Habits for Life," a program to educate young children and their caregivers about the essentials of healthy living.

* $212,367 to Haines Borough (Alaska) Public Library, in partnership with Lynn Canal Broadcasting, for "Perspectives: Issues and Explorations," a two-year project to educate rural Alaskans about the impact of alcohol and drug abuse.

* $221,197 to Las Vegas-Clark County (Nev.) Library District. Building on the library's successful "Computer-Assisted Literacy in Libraries" program and partnering with KLVX Communications, "Open Doors" will address the literacy needs of adults. …
