Ray Hill is the gay host of The Prison Show on the Pacifica Radio affiliate KPFT FM in Houston. Hill's show reaches about a quarter of the more than 100 prisons in Texas. Since inmates in the state do not have access to telephones, Hill talks on the air with the mothers, spouses, and children of prisoners who might be in crisis.

Hill was sent to a Texas prison in 1970 after being convicted of burglary and was released in 1975. He has hosted his Friday-night show for 25 years and was among those contacted by onetime Texas prison sex slave Roderick Keith Johnson.

How did you become aware of the Johnson case?

I got a letter from him, and it just rang so true, because in prison sex is a commodity, and the business of participating in it is kind of a game. If you ever get caught up in that game, there's no way out, and you lose all decision-making about with whom you play that game.

Were you surprised by the verdict?

No. It was the wrong time to try this case, and Wichita Falls was the wrong place. …
