IT WAS 1984, AND A GANG OF GRADUATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY of Exeter were organizing themselves into a performance troupe named Forced Entertainment. They had two choices, recalls artistic director Tim Etchells: "To go to London, or not to go to London." They chose not.

Perhaps because they made the northern industrial city of Sheffield their home, it's taken Forced Entertainment some 20 years to establish an international reputation. Now they're getting noticed across the pond: F.E.'s 2004 hit Bloody Mess is due for its U.S. premiere early this month. It runs through Dec. 4 at Los Angeles's Freud Playhouse as part of the UCLA Live! series.

Over the decades, F.E.'s six core artists and dozens of adjunct performers have created collaborative works about the meaning of time, space and theatre--which sounds quite pretentious, when actually the company and its work are anything but. …
