The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) promotes the improvement and extension of library media services in elementary and secondary schools as a means of strengthening the total education program. Its mission is to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field.

In June 2005, AASL adopted a new strategic plan that sets an ambitious agenda to achieve universal recognition of school library media specialists as indispensable educational leaders. The plan addresses five goal areas: guidelines and standards, advocacy, professional development, influence within ALA, and community.

Probing the goals

The guidelines and standards goal emphasizes the importance of school library media programs and information literacy standards for student learning as the model of excellence for the school library media profession. The main objective is to increase the currency and relevancy of AASL's guidelines and standards, reviewing and revising as necessary.

In terms of advocacy, AASL aims to educate all stakeholders to understand and recognize that the school library media specialist and school library programs are essential to teaching and learning. Advocacy efforts will be carried out on national, state, and local levels, with AASL providing support and education to its members.

Professional development will increase the link between member needs, as communicated through surveys and other feedback methods, and professional development programming. …
