Out writer-director Q. Allan Brocka ordered one of his actors to an LGBT youth center to help him better understand his character in Brocka's new movie, Boy Culture. "Jonathon Trent plays a really 'swishy' gay [character named Joey], and he was really concerned [about] coming off as stereotypical. So I sent him to the Lambert House in Seattle, which is my hometown, so he could hang out with the teenagers," Brocka says.

Trent's casting was pure luck, adds the filmmaker, who wrote the screenplay with Philip Pierce based on Matthew Rettenmund's popular novel about a hot young gay hustler called "X" and his roommates--one of whom is Trent's Joey. "Jonathon Trent just happened to be sitting in the lobby," waiting to audition for another film while Brocka was casting. "I was like, 'Who is that guy? Is he auditioning for us? Go ask him.' So he came in and did the reading and nailed it without knowing anything about it. …
