MPC Level 2 Specification Announced - Certification Required

The Multimedia PC Marketing Council has published its Multimedia PC Level 2 Specification and announced that the MPC trademark will be converted to a certification mark.

The new specification reflects a broad industry consensus regarding appropriate functionality for enhanced multimedia computing. Highlights of the Level 2 Specification are required features such as 16-bit sound and a double speed, XA ready, multisession capable CD-ROM drive. Other functional requirements include: 486 or compatible processor, 4MB of RAM, 160MB hard drive and a color monitor with display resolution of 640 x 480 with 65,536 (64K) colors.

The CD-ROM drive must be capable of a sustained 300KB/sec data transfer rate, an average seek time of 400ms or less, and it is recommended that the drive hard on-board buffers of 64KB and implement read-ahead buffering. Audio requirements include 16-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) with: Linear PCM sampling, mandatory 44.1, 22.05 and 11.025KHz sample rate and stereo channels.
