A piece of essential reading for us all is the recently published School Libraries Work! Updated 2006 Edition. This research foundation paper in booklet form, published by Scholastic Library Publishing, updates its first edition in 2004 and offers new and valuable information in support of school libraries and teacher-librarians. The booklet now includes an excerpt from "Why Care About School Libraries?" published in March 2005 by the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science. This position paper reiterates the connection between student achievement and effective school libraries and maintains that teacher-librarians are important instructional leaders and partners in curriculum development and support. School Libraries Work! provides a useful summary of the past 15 years of research, including the results of the most recent state studies in Indiana and Illinois. A new section contains an extensive summary, with graphics, of the key findings of the Illinois study, which indicates that higher test scores occur at all grade levels in schools where

* the library program is flexibly scheduled;

* larger, more current library collections are available;

* students and teachers have widely available access to online resources in the library and in the classroom;

* school libraries are better funded;

* students use school libraries to learn and practice information literacy skills;
