Ruth Pointer Gives Birth to In-Vitro Twins

THROUGH the miracle of modern medicine, pop-soul diva Ruth Pointer and her husband, Michael Sayles, a real estate developer, became proud parents of in-vitro twins last Luly. The babies were born six weeks premature and were delivered by Caesarean section at a Providence, R.I., hospital.

This was no small feat for the 47-year-old songstress who thought her childbearing years were over. With three children, Faun, 28, Milik, 27, and Issa, 15, as well as two grandchildren, the Grammy Award-winning singer thought the only time she'd be in a maternity ward would be to visit someone else.

But fate--and love--have a way of unraveling even the best laid plans.

Shortly after meeting her 36-year-old husband in Los Angeles four years ago, Pointer felt Sayles was the kind of man she would like to have children with. "He is such a traditional kind of guy," she says. "I need that kind of grounding."

Yet, she knew in order to achieve pregnancy she would have to overcome major physical obstacles.

Pointer, who had her tubes tied several years ago, underwent a procedure to remove eggs from her ovaries. The eggs were then frozen and later implanted in her uterus for fertilization. She took hormone shots to help sustain the pregnancy.

Unfortunately, the embryos didn't progress. "We were very disappointed after the second time," Pointer remembers. "I was very emotional. I was taking hormone injections and it was as if I were going through PMS and menopause at the same time. I was in hormone hell. …
