Students can find a positive outlet for openly discussing the issues that come from dealing with an emotional or behavioral disability when they participate in The Drama Discovery. Author Shellie Hipsky, Ed.D., is an assistant professor of education at Robert Morris University. Her theater background includes teaching drama at an International Baccalaureate Academy, and serving as the director of education for the Gemini Theater. She also recently served as an assistant principal in charge of curriculum and supervision at a school for students with emotional/behavioral disabilities. In the following excerpt, Dr. Hipsky shares several improvisational scene prompts to be performed in pairs.

Partner Improv

Objective: The students will be able to demonstrate the ability to perform improvisational scenes by engaging in a dialogue.

Procedures: Discuss as a whole group improvisation, character development and objectives of a scene. The scenes will be distributed to the students in pairs. The students will perform dialogue scenes based on the scenarios. Discuss the way that the characters reacted to the various situations.

Extension: The scene can be used as a prompt for creative writing.
