HighBeam Research, Inc. has raised the bar on its content collection. The Chicago-based online research firm now has plenty of upgrades to go around for new users and longtime subscribers alike.

New users can sample HighBeam's enhanced service without formally registering and tap into more than 1.5 million full-text articles for free. HighBeam subscribers can try out premium offerings, which now total more than 35 million full-text articles. The premium content has been kicked up a notch too, with thousands of additional reference and news articles from Oxford University Press, The Washington Post, and Knight-Ridder.

The free service, according to Patrick Spain, chairman and CEO, comes from more than 200 sources that cover business, science, and news and that appeal to a broad range of interest. HighBeam has also started spidering and linking to the open Web to broaden its reach. When users click on content citations, they will end up on the publishers' sites to access the specific documents. …
