I look around the room. Here, crowding the children's court, are almost 50 friends and family members--nearly all of whom either had a hand in bringing William into our home or helped us after he arrived.

And in 14 minutes he won't be our foster child any longer he]] be our son. In "a loving, warm, permanent family."

"Mr. Mason, Mr. Barclay ... by executing this adoption agreement you agree with each other and the state of California ... to treat young William as if he was your natural and legal child, with all the benefits and rights of a natural and legal child ... do you understand and agree to that?

"Yes, we do."

"I have the adoption agreement forms signed by Mr. Barclay and Mr. Mason, in which they agree with the state of California and the child that the child shall be adopted ... and I'm going to sign that agreement form."

As our hearts pound, 18-month-old William, in his first three-piece suit, sits in Christopher's lap and looks to the judge as if he understands. …
