HELO Members Lobby on Capitol Hill for City Issues

Among its activities at this year's NLC Congressional City Conference and City Lobby Day, two members of HELO's Board of Directors met with Sabrina DeSantiago, of Democratic Minority Leader Harry Reid's staff and Angela Ramirez, executive director, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, to discuss immigration issues, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and tax reform.

The HELO leaders that attended were Julie Ruiz-Raber, mayor pro tem, and Karen Avilla, city treasurer, both of Carson, Calif.

HELO convened meetings of its Board of Directors and membership during conference.

"We have the opportunity to make great strides in identifying important policy issues that help our communities in our work with NLC," said Mayor Joseph Maestas, Espanola, N.M., HELO president. "I encourage our Board members and individuals within our membership to help get the word out to potential HELO members that we are at the table and are becoming increasingly involved in examining the issues that are important to our cities and towns.

"HELO's leadership in bringing about a resolution on immigration to NLC last year is a prime example of our commitment and dedication to advocacy," he said.

NLC First Vice President Bart Peterson, mayor of Indianapolis, and Second Vice President Cynthia McCollum, councilmember, Madison, Ala., carne to the HELO membership meeting to emphasize the importance of HELO's presence within NLC.

National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) President Felicia Moore, councilmember, Atlanta, also spoke to HELO members and encouraged there to work with NBC-LEO on examining the issues and implications of the Voting Rights Act. …
