There's a sign-of-the-times story about a women whose reason for undertaking an IVF programme was that she and her partner were just too busy to make time for sex. How they might ever make time for a child is a question evidently left for some future executive briefing.

Even the magic moment of birth is no longer left entirely to nature. Elective caesareans are on the rise--an event to be diarised, along with the date of return to work (often within a few weeks) and the bookings for childcare or appointment of nanny.

Hard not to think that the pendulum has swung too far--from the financially dependent, career-lacking and chronically under-stimulated housewife to the manic time management of modern-day families where both parents not only need to work but are busy pursuing careers with equal dedication whilst managing homes and children.

In more cynical moments, I could believe that for some career couples, children are just another form of accessorising. …
