The best thing about sleeping outside in summer is star watching as you fall asleep. If you're camping in the mountains, the experience is especially vivid because the sky feels close enough to touch and the view is accompanied by nature's own soundtrack. I can close my eyes as I write this and instantly picture the night sky over Yosemite.

As we started working on this year's camping guide (page 164), we debated how many of our readers actually enjoy roughing it in the great outdoors. I'll admit I require more hot showers and a comfier bed than I used to, but we found ourselves quickly reaching the conclusion that there is no better way to experience the beauty of the West than to immerse yourself in it.

Camping gets you back in touch with the raw materials of life. After all, there's only so much you can pack, and you quickly learn what you do and don't need to survive. Flashlight? Check. Sleeping bag? …
