NEC Unveils Triple Speed Drives

NEC has introduced its new triple speed drives, boasting a 195ms access time and transfer rates of 450KB/sec. Marc Miller, vice president and general manager of NEC's Advanced Media Group, says the new drives "are really geared to moving technology to the next level." He continued, "We've spent a year and a half looking at the marketplace and redefining what it takes to do CD-ROM." NEC used focus groups and explored how offices were using CD-ROM to "rethink" the whole CD-ROM experience. "We've taken every element--the features, the function, the design--of the reader and changed it," Mr. Miller said.

The 3X readers feature a new caddy-based, one handed loading mechanism with a distinctive rotating door. Front panel audio controls allow the readers to double as standalone CD-Audio players.
