Former Mayor Named Head of Gun Violence Prevention Group

One of the nation's leaders in the fight to prevent gun violence announced last week that a former member of NLC's Board of Directors will take the reins as president at an important time for the cause.

As gun violence prevention supporters are pitted against forces allowing limited gun control, Former Fort Wayne, Ind., Mayor Paul Helmke, attorney with the Helmke Beams LLP firm, will be at the helm of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in early July.

The search for a leader who can help navigate the fight to reduce gun violence and take action to get illegal guns off the streets was extensive. But, Helmke's courage and integrity has been demonstrated throughout his political career.

NLC Executive Director Donald J. Borut is one person who can vouch for that.

"Paul is the right person for this very important job," Borut said. "He served as the first chair of our Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy Committee when it was created in 1994. In that capacity, he helped shape NLC's position on gun control."

The Brady Campaign Board of Trustees' announcement of the selection comes at a time when mayors across the country are engaging in efforts to fight illegal gun trafficking--an issue on which the organization recently created a grassroots based campaign. …
