Frattini Inaugurates Eu Border Agency in Warsaw

The EU border management agency (Frontex) was formally inaugurated in Warsaw on June 30 by EU Justice, Freedom and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini and Luxembourg Justice Minister Luc Frieden for the EU Presidency. In Poland for an inspection of the eastern border, Mr Frattini and Mr Frieden went on to address the second meeting of Frontex's management board. At the board's first meeting on May 25, Finland's Ilkka Laitinen was appointed Director and the Netherlands' Minze Atte Beuving as Chairperson. Frontex, set up by the EU Council of Ministers in October 2004, is supposed to co-ordinate joint border-control operations, carry out risk analyses, organise joint expulsions of illegal immigrants and assist in border guard training. Its budget is euro 6.28 million for 2005 and 9.95 million for 2006 and it will have up to 57 staff.

Meanwhile, the Commission announced on June 29 that EU funding to boost co-operation between member states on controlling the external border, visa, asylum and immigration policies would total euro 6. …
