Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins has been getting credit lately for being a founding father of the Seattle scene, but he takes it all in stride. "Better us than Poison," he shrugs. "Frankly, when the Melvins played in Seattle, we couldn't get 50 people at a show. Things took off for us as soon as we left."

Since the mid '80s, the San Francisco-based Melvins have been pounding out their distinctively twisted dirge-metal for various indie labels. But now, following the success of musical stepchildren such as Nirvana, Osbourne (alias King Buzzo), drummer Dale Crover, and new bassist Mark Deutrom have landed on a major label. Their first Atlantic release, Houdini, offers thundering sludge-rock, demented meters, scary quiet moments, and an obscure Kiss cover. Kurt Cobain co-produced six tracks and added effects-laden licks to "Sky Pup." "He's left-handed, but we made him play a right-handed guitar strung normally," Osbourne explains. …
