Argos, the world's third largest catalogue chain, is this week throwing down the gauntlet to discounters with a |pounds~4m television, press and radio campaign supporting its new Christmas gift booklet and catalogue.

The mixture of promotional-based activity, which includes price cuts on 500 key Christmas gift items such as jewellery and toys, is co-ordinated by ad agency Ogilvy & Mather.

The ten-second and 20-second TV commercials will be on screen until Christmas and will appear across all regions, as well as on satellite and Channel 4. They will run at the same time as Argos ads in every mainstream national newspaper and radio ads will broadcast in areas with one of the 32 Argos Superstores which stock a wider product range (6500 items).

Sixty new products will also be featured in the 56-page Christmas gift booklet, including perfume, flying lessons and video games.
