We've all heard about the new boss who calls people into his office and, one by one, fires them without knowing anything about their backgrounds. The recent mergers and acquisitions, restructurings and their attendant new strategic directions have created a lot of turmoil in personnel. Some of the churn is unnecessary; it's due to "the grass is always greener syndrome," explains Ruth Diem, vice president/human resources director at The New Yorker, who spoke at a Magazine Publishers of America conference. "We live in a throw-away society, and that goes for the way management sometimes thinks of employees," she says. "After all, we all know there are a lot of qualified people out there looking for jobs. Immediately, when a manager has a problem with an employee, he wants to toss that one and get the next one.
