Hunt Takes Top Sainsbury Slot

The UK's largest food retailer, Sainsbury, has promoted former director of marketing services, Ivor Hunt, to board level marketing director following a boardroom reshuffle.

At the same time, the company is denying that a new 30,000 sq ft store selling goods in bulk is its response to Costco, the US warehouse club which opened its first UK branch this week (Marketing Story, p12).

Hunt takes over the key marketing role in March next year from Robin Whitbread, who becomes director for grocery and non-foods following the retirement of Keith Worrall, who held the position since 1986. The appointment of Hunt as board marketing director bypasses Anthony Rees, currently director of marketing under Sainsbury's two-tier directorial system.

Hunt is a dyed-in-the-wool Sainsbury man who has worked at the company since 1971 when he was appointed as head of statistical services. He became director of marketing services in 1987.

A Sainsbury spokesman says the appointment does not signify any new change in marketing approach. …
