What do multimedia, barcodes, digital photos, imaging, databases, and cyberspace have to do with infrastructure, and more specifically, wastewater treatment? Nothing--unless you want to reduce your costs, extend the life of your infrastructure, maximize your human resources, and provide quality services to citizens.

The New York City Coney Island wastewater treatment plant, in continuous operation with incremental upgrades since the late 1800's, began to undergo major improvements in the mid-1970's. It became clear that labor-intensive "pencil and paper" record keeping of maintenance operations and requirements would need a major rehaul to manage the expanded and modernized facilities.

The Coney Island plant now utilizes a state-of-the art Maintenance Management System developed by a City of New York Department of Environmental Protection software specialist, Michael Kaufman. Several computer software packages were integrated to create for the Coney Island Water Pollution plant a low-cost, comprehensive maintenance package for wastewater treatment plants.

Kaufman's experience as a Coney Island plant operator, coupled with his efforts to incorporate the needs of managers and operators, served to define the parameters for a sophisticated multi-media system that is both user-friendly and efficient.

Imagine, for example, a plant manager discovers an immediate need to replace a specific type of bearing, and enters a key word into the terminal ("BEARING"). The manager is presented with all part names that include the word "BEARING", identifies the one needed, and is instantly presented with screens that include:

* Digital photos of equipment

* Construction drawings showing location of equipment in the facility.

* Serial and model numbers.

* The name, address and phone numbers of local suppliers and the manufacturer

Historical records on preventive and corrective maintenance, including materials used and time taken to complete the work. …
