The independence of Barclaycard marketing from that of its parent bank has been questioned this week, following the appointment of a new man at the Barclays helm.

Mike McManus, for eight years the marketing chief at the credit card division, is to take over from John Cheese who stands down next March after his five-year contract was not renewed.

News of the appointment has surprised several industry pundits. Cheese's right-hand man Gordon Rankin was believed to be in line for the top slot. He applied for the job, and has recently changed over from a fixed five-year contract to a permanent one.

McManus's move has therefore led some to suspect that a closer alignment between the two separate departments is on the cards.

"It's been mooted for a long time," says one recent Barclays insider. "McManus's appointment over at the bank could prompt that move."

McManus concedes there has been a drawing together of the two marketing teams, but denies the separate brand identities will be merged. …
