BIOSIS Develops Library School Curriculum

BIOSIS, the abstracting and indexing service for the life sciences, announced an innovative compact disc curriculum, presented free of charge to library schools offering accredited graduate-level programs. This curriculum, offered in conjunction with SilverPlatter Inforfmation, Inc., utilizes two of BIOSIS' key life science research tools, Biological Abstracts on Campact Disc and Biological Abstracts/RRM on Compact Disc, to introduce students to the range of life science coverage available from BIOSIS, and to help them master the use of CDROM technology for research purposes.

Over 45 American Library Association-accredited graduate library schools throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico are participating in this unique educational program. Each participating school received informative materials to help instructors conduct comprehensive lessons. These materials include:

* A free copy of Biological Abstracts on CD and Biological Abstracts/RRM on CD, each covering six months' worth of references

* SPIRS (SilverPlatter Information Retrieval Software) software, manual and Quick Reference Cards

* Copies of the brochure How to Search Biological Abstract on Compact Disc and Biological Abstracts/ RRM on Compact Disc

* Overheads for instructors describing database content and indexing

* Teacher's notes and students handouts to accompany overheads

* Sample questions for reinforcing instruction

In addition, BOSIS offers extensive support to these schools, including visits from technical staff, and call-in access through a toll-free Help Desk in Philadelphia. …
