Advocate for Treatment Funding Named NAADAC Legislator of the Year

The National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) has honored Representative Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) as the NAADAC 'legislator of year' for his "support of substance abuse treatment in the criminal justice system."

Schumer, one of the Key Democrats who led the charge to get the Brady Bill passed, serves as chairman of the Crime and Criminal Justice Subcommittee. He has become an outspoken advocate for treatment, especially within the criminal justice system.

In accepting the NAADAC award, Congressman Schumer told those assembled at the recent Joint Legislative Conference that his support for treatment stems from national pride. "I have become a leading advocate of funds for treatment in the criminal justice system and elsewhere, because I am a proud and patriotic American. I love my country and I want to see my country stay the greatest country on earth. We can't be a great country if we are going to continue to just allow lives to be wasted. We're not going to be able to compete against Japan or Germany if we have 10 percent or 5 percent of our citizens unable to be productive. It's that simple. …
