The Nation's Health Wins National Recognition; Three-Part Series on Healthy Aging Wins Clarion Award

Article excerpt

A series of articles in The Nation's Health that focused on healthy aging has brought national acclaim to APHA.

In July, the three-part series won a 2006 Clarion Award from the Association for Women in Communications in the category of Newspaper Feature Series, circulation of 100,000 or fewer. The Nation's Health competed against newspapers from across the country for the award and was named the sole winner.

The series, authored by Kim Krisberg, the newspaper's senior editor, was published in the March, May and June/July 2005 issues of The Nation's Health. The series discussed key aging issues and the way public health professionals are working to support healthy aging for Americans. The articles explored nutrition, exercise and healthy aging; the public health work force and the aging U.S. population; and cultural competencies and older Americans.

The series included interviews with public health workers and educators from across the country and research into healthy aging. APHA's Task Force on Aging and Gerontological Health Section played a role in suggesting ideas, information and sources for the stories.

The series tied into APHA's 2005 celebration of National Public Health Week, which had a theme of "Empowering Americans to Live Stronger, Longer."
