The Montreux Symposium, a name meant to symbolise the ne plus ultra in European direct marketing conventions, has been cancelled -- again.

The event, which was scheduled to take place in Switzerland from April 10-13, was revived only last year and was billed as having an improved and more ambitious forum for the exchange of direct marketing ideas.

The cancellation this year has been blamed on the low number of pre-registrations, which has "indicated that we will not reach the break-even point of 500 paying participants," said Symposium president Erik Van Vooren.

Incredibly, Van Vooren claimed that feedback from last year's event "confirms that we are on the right track with the new Montreux Symposium". And he stated that many "industry leaders" agreed that the concept is "perfect".

All that is wrong, he argued, is the timing. "In the current economic situation it is difficult to relaunch such a high quality event." Van Vooren claimed the moral high ground by congratulating himself for giving early notice of cancellation. …
