A single CD-ROM that features all the major English-language psychiatric journals and textbooks was previewed last month at Intermedia, the International Conference and Exposition on Multimedia and CD-ROM. The American Psychiatric Press Inc. demonstrated the forthcoming Windows and Macintosh editions of The American Psychiatric Electronic Library at the booth of Online Computer Systems Inc. The discs are scheduled to ship in May 1994.

Online is partnering with APPI to produce the library, which uses Online's Opti-Ware search-and-retrieval technology to bring easy and almost instantaneous access to diagnostic and reference literature to psychiatrists, medical professionals, and other users.

Described by APPI as "the next step in psychiatric literature," the forthcoming CD-ROMs feature volumes of literature, figures, photographs, and information that may be cross-referenced by term, concept, diagnosis and treatment with the click of a mouse.

A hypertext edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, coupled to the search-and-retrieval capabilities of Opti-Ware allow any user to browse the index, table of contents, and thesauri of the books and journals, and trigger an instantaneous search by highlighting any keyword, phrase, code or reference. Special features enable the user to "scope" a search, using templates to construct specific searches or select specific publications to search. Users may also browse via hierarchical descriptors, hypertext linking and embedded reference linking. …
