I REMEMBER great lines from Sunset like most people remember great lines from movies. One of my favorites is from a 1947 article titled "They live all over the lot."

The story profiled homeowners in Hollywood who managed to fill every square foot of their property with ideas for living both inside and out. And here's the line I love: "Once you let Western living break out of the box house, it's hard to stop it from flowing all over the lot."

Making the most of outdoor living space is still second nature in the West. This is exactly what we had in mind when we designed and built our Sunset Celebration Idea House (page 120) for the annual festival held each May at our headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Constructed on a temporary foundation in our parking lot, the house features an outdoor family room and spacious decks that seem to double the overall size of the house. It also showcases the use of structural insulated panels (SIPs)--precut framing units that enabled us to put the house together quickly. …
