The Man Who Outed Karl Rove's Dad

In their new book The Architect (Crown), James Moore and Wayne Slater reveal that Karl Rove, George W. Bush's chief political strategist and the man who skillfully exploited homophobia in the 2004 election, was raised by a gay stepfather. After divorcing Karl's mom in 1969, Louis Rove moved to Los Angeles, then Palm Springs, where he lived until his death in 2004. Moore spoke with The Advocate.

How did you learn that Louis was gay?

A lot of people have been scrutinizing the Republican Party in terms of hypocrisy on the matter of gay rights, and without identifying the individual, one of them had gotten an e-mail from someone in Palm Springs who mentioned it. I started making phone calls to check out the family background, and one person led to another. Finally, I called up Joe Koons, his closest friend, and he told me everything--how Karl loved and respected [Louis] and Louis loved and respected Karl. …
