Something special happened at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana, on 14 October. For the first time in the 57-year history of the university, the new king of Asante, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II (right, top photo) in his capacity as the chancellor of the university, presided over a colourful ceremony to induct Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa (left, top photo) as the new vice chancellor, the eight since the university was founded.

The investiture was held in high pomp and pageantry as only the Asantes know best. The Asantehene, who himself was installed as chancellor at a lavish ceremony on 25 March this year, reminded the incoming vice chancellor of the great task facing him. "You are not oblivious of the various challenges that are confronting the university such as lecture halls, inadequate student halls, student indiscipline, etc," the monarch said. "In like manner, you are also fully aware of the various opportunities that are presented which can be explored to our advantage ... The doors of the [university] council chairman and I are fully open. Under no circumstance should I be kept in the dark on any development on campus."

Prof Adarkwa, 55, the son of a former police officer, takes over at an exciting time in the life of the university. During the tenure of his immediate predecessor, Prof Kwesi Andam, a lot of changes were introduced; some have borne fruit, some are yet to. Adarkwa now has the responsibility to see all these programmes come to fruition.

He acknowledged as much in his investiture address. "Two years ago," he said, "the university evolved and launched its Corporate Strategic Plan (PLAN2K14) with a clearly defined vision, and mission statements which are still as relevant today as they were then. The plan is a clear and thoughtful, collective vision to enhance our academic quality, diversity and stature as a world class university. …
