Marketing makes the world go around.

It's not a widely held position, but it is my professional philosophy. I've been covering marketing and advertising for 20 years and I've seen marketing move shake and shape the universe. All while most consumers deny it's happening.

I had an editor once--one of the smartest women I've ever worked with--who lived in New York City and drove an SUV. Why an SUV? She rattled off features such as four-wheel drive and cargo space. But as a single woman living on the paved island of Manhattan, she didn't need either of those two features. Finally, she said, "I love this car. It makes me feel great." Nothing about the machinery can do that. That's marketing.

The power of marketing is what makes me especially happy to take on this new role as Editor of MARKETING TO WOMEN. How products are developed, positioned, advertised and sold has a huge influence on us all. …
