1. Noddy and the Tootles by Enid Blyton (Noddy Books, 1.68 [pounds sterling])

The critics have missed Noddy's complexity. This book made me a young liberal

My oldest possession, this is a crudely colourful book I had when I started school in England. it was such a comfort to know that there were battles the English hadn't won

My mother's idea of bedtime stories for a small child and my discovery of comic writing

4. Melincourt by Thomas Love Peacock (Out of print)

A toss-up between this, The Hound of the Baskervilles, PG Wodehouse's The Mating Season and Betjeman's CollectedPoemsto representthe Englishness I came to love. Peacock has the edge because he also sparked my interest in primatology
