Sun, Mosaic to Collaborate on Internet Technologies

Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Mosaic Communications Corporation - two companies offering products and services on the Internet - will collaborate on new security technology aimed at accelerating electronic commerce on the global network. The companies will work together to propose technologies to various standards bodies for such areas as authentication, security, and billing.

Also as part of the agreement, Sun will include in its new Internet server, Netra, a coupon for Mosaic Communications' server software at a discount price. Mosaic Communication's Mosaic Netsite server software and Mosaic Netscape network navigator offer greatly increased performance over the NCSA Mosaic prototype as well as integrated bulletproof security and full support.

"There is enormous commercial potential for the Internet, but it has not been a viable commercial medium to date because of security, authentication, and billing deficiencies," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, chief technology officer for Sun. "It's logical that Sun and Mosaic Communications would combine their technological know-how to give customers the tools they need to do business online. …
