"I didn't get into Hendrix until later," recollects Lucky Peterson. "My father didn't listen to no psychedelic music!" What the senior Peterson did listen to, and book into his Buffalo, New York, blues club, were stone blues acts such as Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy. A precocious young Lucky jammed with them all, playing organ, bass, and guitar. At age five he appeared on an album with Willie Dixon, and during his teens he gigged with Little Milton's band.

Last year's I'm Ready, Lucky's first album on Verve and his fifth overall, showcased his torrid guitar work. Now, at the ripe old age of 29, Lucky has put it all together on Beyond Cool, his funky new collection of covers and slick original blues. Peterson's soulful Hammond B-3, headstrong clavinet, and searing, voodoo chile guitar licks jump from the horn-heavy mix.

With his multi-instrumental experience, Lucky is able to bring completely arranged songs to the studio. …
