In Our Do'ers Profile, we highlight some of the hardworking and talented individuals in public human services. This issue features Gerri Robinson of Metro/Nashville Department of Social Services.

Title: Executive director

Years of Service: Two years in my current position. Thirty-five years of social work experience with local, state and federal governments and the private not-for-profit sector.

Rewards of the Job: Developing and implementing programs that are inclusive, effective and efficient is most rewarding. We have recently implemented a data-driven, research-based, best-practice business model. After one year with the new model, the results are very promising.

Accomplishments Most Proud of: I have two accomplishments of which I am particularly proud. In my current position I was successful in downsizing my department without significant job loss. Employees were assisted in finding other positions either within the department or other Metro agencies. In my previous position as deputy director of the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, the department's child welfare staff increased finalized adoptions from 120 to more than 600 per year.

Thoughts About the State of the Medicaid Program: My department, while a public agency, does not provide this service. We are primarily funded by local government and provide services to persons who do not meet eligilibility requirements for services from other public or private service providers. …
