Finnish film and video maker Eija-Liisa Ahtila picked up the Artes Mundi Prize last month--the largest UK arts prize of 40,000 [pounds sterling]. Paolo Colombo, Thelma Golden, Cai Guo-Qiang, Gerardo Mosquera and Jenni Spencer-Davies judged the prize chiefly supported by The Welsh Assembly Government. Work by the eight short-listed artists selected from over 200 nominations, has been displayed at the National Museum & Gallery Cardiff (until May 7); the other seven artists were: Thomas Demand, Mauricio Dias & Walter Riedwig, Leandro Erlich, Subodh Gupta, Sue Williams and Wu Chi-Tsung. Ahtila is the second winner of this biennial award, Mosquera, chair of the judges commenting that 'we were impressed by the sophistication of her artistic language and how she has developed and extended our experience of video art together with artist film'. The Ben Uri Gallery (London Jewish Museum of Art) has been awarded the prize of Best Museum in the Region by Mark Fisher in his newly published book Britain's Best Museums and Galleries Book.
