Adel Abdessemed, Leandro Ehrlich, Philippe Mayaux and Bruno Peinado have been shortlisted for the Marcel Duchamp Prize 2006, which is considered to be the French equivalent of the Turner Prize, with the winner earning 35,000 [euro]. Past winners of the prize (as well as those who have won the younger Ricard Prize) are among some 200 artists who have been selected for the newly created triennial exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris, 'La Force de l'Art' (until June 25). Selected by some 20 curators (including Eric de Chassey, Hou Hanrou, Lorand Hegyi, Bernard Marcade, Eric Troncy, Xavier Veilhan, Philippe Vergne and Olivier Zahm), it is the brainchild of the poet and French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and has 'contemporariness and pluralitry as a leitmotif'. Last year he visited the FIAC art fair in Paris and, upset by seeing first hand the minor role that French art plays in the international art market, he launched the idea of a state-sponsored exhibition of French contemporary art to be scheduled before the coming presidential elections. …
