A Look at ... Secondary-Level Software and Webware

Article excerpt

TODAY, computer-related resources for secondary education include everything from exciting new software for video-editing tasks that weren't really possible in high schools 20 years ago to extraordinary subscription databases. In between can be found Web-based courseware that is becoming larger and larger in scope, more sophisticated assessment tools, and some programs with intriguing electronic delivery methods.

Many of the programs discussed here can be useful in schools with limited computer access. Teachers can encourage and train small groups of students to develop video projects and incorporate them into other course work through video editing software. To take advantage of Web- or network-based assessment programs, educators can modify lab and class schedules.

Computerized remediation programs offered during or after school or in the summer can be extremely effective for struggling students. These remediation programs seem to be called "credit recovery" programs more often now.

The programs discussed in this article are aimed at students in middle or high school. These titles do not cover all subject matters; the purpose of this article is to represent some current trends in educational technology, not to extensively review the categories.
