Moving into previously vacated gallery premises is this month's trend, suggesting that space is ever more at a premium within the capital. AICON (Arts India Contemporary) opens this month at 8 Heddon Street, an address previously occupied by Gagosian Gallery. The gallery, which has additional venues in New York and California, opens with two painters, Riyas Komu and Peter Drake (March 16 to April 15). Robert Storr has selected Komu for the upcoming Venice Biennale, and Komu forms part of a burgeoning group of contemporary Indian artists referred to as 'Bombay Boys'. Owners and brothers Prajit and Projjal Dutta have speculated on a London venue for some time, and Prajit comments that 'A pound in London buys what a dollar buys in New York--meaning that everything is almost double over here'. Plans for the space include group shows of Pakistani and Turkish contemporary art and solo shows by Jayashree Chakravarty, Anant Joshi, Ashim Purakayastha, Shibu Natesan and Abir Karmakar. …
