THERE AREN'T TOO MANY cities in the West close enough to the border that you can spend the day abroad and still make it back to your hotel in time for dinner. San Diego is such a city, and one of our favorite day destinations south into Baja is Rosarito Beach, just 18 miles (32 kilometers) beyond the Mexican border.

Rosarito Beach has come a long way since its days as a pit stop en route to Ensenada. Rosarito is less commercial than its southern neighbor. In the fall, after the flocks of summer tourists have flown north, it becomes just another quiet beach town in Baja.

An afternoon spent in Rosarito might begin with shopping and lunch at any of the restaurants on Boulevard Benito Juarez, the town's main drag. Once everyone is fortified, head over to the Rosarito Beach Hotel and follow the signs to the beach for a horseback ride along the ocean.

Down on the sand, several vendors offer rides along the beach for $5 per person per half hour. …
